Authorities from seven leading public universities today suspended all academic activities to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The government's decision came after students from Dhaka University, Bangladesh Institute of Public Health (BIPH) and Bangladesh National University boycotted classes on Sunday. The watchdogs have also called for the closure of educational establishments to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

But the vice-chancellor said emergency services would be available during that time. He told a press briefing at the secretariat after the weekly cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that legal action would be taken in the event of a breach.

Academic activities at Chittagong University will remain admission from March 18 to April 9, and administrative activities will remain admission until March 29 and April 2, the letter said. In the notice, authorities asked students to leave the campus on March 17 and 18, while the halls of residence will remain admission until the afternoon of March 18.

The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology statement issued that day said that after the government's decision, all academic activities at the university would remain admission until March 31, and students were asked to leave the halls before 5 p.m. on April 1. A notice signed by authorities on behalf of Jashore University, a private university in Dhaka, on Thursday, March 16, called on all students to leave the hall by 5.30pm or by March 18, the statement said. Correspondent in JASHore reported: "In an emergency meeting, the authorities in Jashesore, the University of Science and Technology, have decided to close the city's two public universities, Jharkhand University and Bangladesh Institute of Technology and Science, by 30 March and have asked students to vacate the halls of residence by 16: 40 (17 March) in accordance with the orders of the Ministry of Education. University officials said they had signed the notices but had not yet confirmed the exact dates.

Hundreds of tonnes of beams and cement fell on about 500 students at Dhaka University as they watched a popular television programme in the student dormitory. One student said the outer coating of the roof had been removed the same day.

By morning, at least 31 bodies had been recovered, Bangladesh state radio reported. At least two journalists were beaten up for showing press credentials, United News Bangladesh (UNB) said in a report on its website.

The clashes followed clashes on Friday between police and students protesting the presence of soldiers. The troops have been stationed at the university since January, when a military-backed interim government took power after months of political violence.
